Dirk Hartog Island: Return to 1616

The Return to 1616 program aims to restore the ecological condition of Western Australia’s largest island to that seen by Dirk Hartog when he landed on the island in 1616. The program includes feral animal eradication and the re-introduction of 12 mammal species and one bird species. Feral cats, goats and sheep have been eradicated and translocations of four species have been undertaken (banded hare-wallaby, rufous hare-wallaby, Shark Bay bandicoot and dibbler).
